Brisbane’s dream-laced indie outfit Vinted Vineer have returned with their latest single “you,” a heartfelt and ethereal reflection on love’s unexpected arrival. Following on from their shimmering release “zzz,” the band continues to weave their signature blend of psychedelia, shoegaze, and alt-pop into something both deeply personal and effortlessly transportive.
We caught up with the band to chat about the story behind “you,” their creative process, and what’s next as they hit the road this spring.
What first sparked the inspiration behind your new single “you”?
I think sonically, i was listening to a lot of adreinne lenker at the time so some of her ended up in there. The lyrical inspiration drew from me fantasising about those times when you first fall in love.
The song captures that feeling of love arriving unexpectedly — where did that emotion come from?
From lived experience. The song is anecdotal to a point but i try to keep the lyrics vauge enough for listeners to feel their own experience within the songs.
How did the track evolve from its early picking pattern to the final recording we hear now?
The band just spend hours as a group reworking the song in post-production, it’s fun! We record new layers and bits and rearrange the song until it feels comfy.
The lyrics are strikingly simple and direct — was that intentional from the start?
Well the instrumental came first and it already had a simplistic, minimalist kinda thing going on, so i went with it when coming up with the vocal melody and same for the lyrics.
How did recording “you” in your home studio with Ruben McIntyre influence its sound?
The four of us as a band actually recorded most of the song without ruben. It was the production that he was responsible for which is arguably more important. Ruben is a long time friend of ours and he is the unofficial 5th member of our band and has a direct impact on our sound. He allows us to create the sounds we have on the tips of our tongues.
There’s even a banjo in the outro — what led to that creative choice? I’ve always loved the sound of it and i was listening to sufjan stevens’ “Illinois” around then also. It fits in nicely with the plucky guitars i think.
You’ve supported acts like Velvet Trip and Nice Biscuit — how have those experiences shaped your live energy?
Greatly. Its always inspiring to play with people you look up to. you learn so much about performance in those moments wherein you are blessed with an opportunity like that.
What can fans expect from the upcoming “you” music video? (single launch passed)
This one's kind of a spiritual sibling to our last video. It’s got a simple narrative running through it, nothing too deep, but enough to give the track its own little world. We had such a good time building a story around the last song that it just made sense to do it again. This time we leaned even more into that movie vibe, with a few cheeky nods to some of our favourite shows and films if you’re paying attention. It’s still very us, just having fun creating another universe around the music. It’s out this Thursday!!!
How important is community to you, and would you say Vinted Veneer has a pretty solid community around them?
Community is everything. Put simply it just makes things more enjoyable. The more the merrier as they say. The social / community interaction aspect of the band is something I’ve come to love as its grown.
Who are some emerging bands/artists and or general creatives from your community you want to put out there for our readers?
Thurman, Special Features, Miss Mardy, Media Puzzle, Tomorrows Forecast, Double Date, Earth to Josh
