LISTEN TO THIS! Week of April 8th

LISTEN TO THIS lineup is a massive collision of shoegaze haze, emo nostalgia, and electronic grit. We’re kicking things off with the ethereal sounds of newcomers She’s Green, followed by a high-energy dose of 2000s emo revival as Static Dress joins forces with Underoath. On the local front, Screensaver has delivered an incredible new album—perfect timing given they’ll be supporting Sleaford Mods in Sydney in just a few weeks.

Rounding out the mix, we explore the intricate textures of electronic producer Shinichi, take a heavy trip down memory lane with a Sepultura throwback, and dive into the latest single from Dry Cleaning to get prepped for their Australian tour this June.

1. SHE’S GREEN - PAPER THIN

she's green, from Minneapolis, have a gauzy, dreamy sound that they call "moss music." I think that's cool. More bands should invent their own fake genres. If she's green hadn't done that, we'd just be calling them a shoegaze band, and that description would be reductive and a little inaccurate. They're definitely in the shoegaze zone, but there's some Cocteau Twins and maybe a little Helium in there, too.

she's green released their EP Chrysalis last year, and they followed it with a really cool single called "Mettle" earlier this year. Today, they announce another EP called Swallowtail. It'll come out this summer, after she's green play the Slide Away festival and open some of Chapterhouse's North American shows. "Mettle" is on the EP, and so is the softer, gooier new song "Paper Thin."

2. STATIC DRESS - NOSTALGIA KILLS FT UNDEROATH

British post-hardcore/screamo outfit Static Dress have released a new song, “Nostalgia Kills,” featuring collaborations with members of the gold-certified metalcore band Underoath. The accompanying music video, out now, includes Underoath’s Spencer Chamberlain (vocals) and Aaron Gillespie (drums/vocals) alongside Static Dress. The video was co-directed by Zak Pinchin (Split Chain, Love Is Noise) and Static Dress frontman Oli Appleyard.

“‘Nostalgia Kills‘ has allowed us to demonstrate the elevation of this band between all four members. It’s shown not only how much we’ve all grown as musicians individually, but together, to create something which is sonically stronger than we’ve ever been. Also, having the opportunity to have a band like Underoath on it feels like a stamp of approval from real legends of the post-hardcore genre.”

The track is set to appear on Static Dress’ upcoming second album, “Injury Episode,” due out May 29th via Sumerian Records. The band have also shared their first interview about the record with Kerrang!.

3. SCREENSAVER - THREE LENS APPROACH

On Three Lens Approach, screensaver captures the friction of the modern moment by balancing shimmering vulnerability with tectonic shifts of aggression. This record is defined by a constant emotional tug-of-war, where moments of tender, heart-on-sleeve lyricism are suddenly interrupted by the white heat of industrial-grade frustration. The band’s evolution is marked by a sophisticated blending of genres that feel both nostalgic and futuristic, grounding a hypnotic, motorik Krautrock pulse within the infectious grooves of seventies dance music. They masterfully weave together the spacious, shadowy textures of moody dub with the sharp, neon edges of new wave and the dark energy of death disco, creating a sound that makes their signature post-punk anxiety feel physically galvanizing.

Building on the foundations laid by Expressions of Interest and Decent Shapes, this album finds the group at their most self-assured. By leaning into an asymmetrical pop sensibility, screensaver has successfully expanded their sonic universe, delivering a collection of tracks that are as intellectually complex as they are undeniably danceable.

They will be supporting SLEAFORD MODS (UK) in Sydney on April 17th

4. SHINICHI ATOBE - SILENT WAY

Shinichi Atobe’s singular brand of house and techno radiates a rare kind of sincerity, constructed from luminous, steady loops that operate according to a private, unpredictable clockwork. For twenty-five years, the producer’s career was defined by a self-imposed exile from the limelight, but the 2020s have seen him cautiously—and perhaps ironically—stepping into the light. His 2024 conversation with Tone Glow, a landmark moment as his first-ever public interview, painted a portrait of a creator who shuns grand artistic narratives in favor of a simpler existence, famously citing "sleeping" as his primary pastime. Consequently, Atobe’s musical progression has been a lateral move rather than a linear one; he continues to refine his specific oddities through a sequence of albums that feel like siblings, distinguished as much by their haunting, still-life photography as their internal rhythms. On his latest effort, Silent Way, Atobe sounds more self-assured than ever, yet he remains stubbornly enigmatic, delivering his most challenging and least accessible work to date.

5. SEPULTURA - MORBID VISIONS / BESTIAL DEVASTATION

Bestial Devastation is the debut extended play (EP) by Brazilian heavy metal band Sepultura, released in 1985 by Cogumelo Records.

It is the band's first official release, and originally appeared alongside Overdose's Século XX as a split album. The EP's songs were later released as bonus tracks on the CD version of Morbid Visions. The EP, alongside Morbid Visions, was re-recorded by founding Sepultura members Max and Igor Cavalera under their band Cavalera in 2023.

Throwing it back this week to this incredible and foundation record

6. DRY CLEANING - SLICED BY A FINGERNAIL

Dry Cleaning kicked off the year with their new album Secret Love. The UK post-punks are already back to share an ominous new tune called "Sliced By A Fingernail" right before their tour.

"A lot of attention makes them feel sliced up," bandleader Florence Shaw says about the song's protagonist. "So they fantasize about being hidden inside a huge flower bud and about being anonymous in a crowd at night. The image of a brown mark from a finger nail pressed into a petal inspired some of the lyrics. I thought about peony buds not opening and then browning, and their tightness. The lyrics were also inspired by illustrator Jooyoung Kim's picture book about a dog who has a long body, called 'Welcome to My Life.'"
