Wednesday have officially announced their next chapter: Bleeds, a 12-track album due out September 19 via Dead Oceans. The Asheville-based outfit has shared a first glimpse of the record with the emotionally potent new single “Wound Up Here (By Holdin On)”, accompanied by a stark and stirring music video directed by Joriel Cura.
Frontperson Karly Hartzman explained the song’s origins came from a story told by a friend who once recovered a body from a creek in West Virginia. The line “I wound up here by holdin on” was borrowed from a poetry collection by Evan Gray, gifted to Hartzman and MJ Lenderman on tour. “That line stuck out to me as pure genius, so I stole it and wrote the rest of the song in my own words around it,” Hartzman shared in a press release.
Bleeds was recorded at Drop of Sun studio in Asheville with longtime collaborator Alex Farrar, who also produced Rat Saw God and Twin Plagues. The band—Karly Hartzman, MJ Lenderman, Xandy Chelmis (lap/pedal steel), Ethan Baechtold (bass/piano), and Alan Miller (drums)—continue to dig into their signature noisy, Southern-fried indie rock across these new songs.
