Interview with Naarm/Melbourne band ‘Garage Sale’ about their new single ‘Movie’

A couple of weeks ago i came across this song on Spotify, as i was most likely listening to emo-daze, or drowned out indie music as i usually do in the background while i’m working through emails over my morning coffee, and came across a song called ‘Movie’ — At first i assumed it was an American band that i’ve never heard of, but turned out it was an Australian band that i never heard of called ‘Garage Sale’

‘Finding love for each other in the softer moments, built for the honest and earnest’ — Garage Sale

Garage Sale really to me gave off a vibe of bands like Tigers Jaw, Gleemer, Hotline TNT, Alex G which i personally love — so i reached out to learn more about the new release ‘Movie’ and get some more info about the release, and what’s coming up

Hey Garage Sale, How are you today?

Benji Luke: Hey Jonny, I'm good today, we're chilling today! I'm having a pink lemonade vodka and getting ready to print some CDs for our label.

Give us some insight into Garage Sale? How did you come together? Does the name have a story?

BL: The name doesn't have a story, it's hard on the SEO but it means we get free advertising in most neighborhoods.

I'm a new listener, but i really like what i hear so far from singles 'Movie' and 'Blank Again' - Can you tell us more about these releases? and what's coming up from the band?

BL: They were two pretty special songs written in a transitional time for everyone in the band.

Being based in Narrm/Melbourne, are you playing alot of shows there if so when, and do you have any plans to come north?

BL: Yeah! We play as much as we can and are touring this August. We'll be in every state along the south and east coast.

What are you influences for Garage Sale? I hear alot bedroom indie, emo etc influences in there but how would you describe it?

BL: We don't really have one descriptor. We all love modern scene and alternative music and are all obsessive over scenes of music from the 90s and 2000s.

One of my fav 2023 releases was Hotline TNT's Cartwheel record, what would be your go-to records/artists for listening when you have down time?

BL: I listen to a broad range of emo. I like old Death Cab but have been rediscovering some of their later records.

Who are some artists from your community that we should be listening to?

BL: The artists on my label, Sore Horse. Swapmeet just released a new record, Freezer are gearing up for another tour. Catey plays in one of our drummers, Marci's, new band Everyday Believer which is excellent. I could go on...

Where can we catch you on Socials?

IDK! Everywhere really, hit the insta>>> @garagesaleband

Any last words?

BL: We're glad you like the music and thanks for the interview <3
