S:Bahn is an Australian post-punk and noise-rock group formed in Melbourne during the mid-1990s. Renowned for their angular guitar riffs, deconstructed melodies, and dark-humoured, sardonic lyrics, the band emerged as a key force in Melbourne's underground guitar-rock scene alongside contemporaries such as Sea Scouts, Ricaine, and Art of Fighting.
Built around the core lineup of Rene Schaefer (bass), Dik Detonic (guitar/vocals), and Dennis Leadbeater (drums), S:Bahn established a early reputation for an abrasive and brooding sonic style.
The band released their debut EP, Stock Footage, via Shock Records in 1995, followed by their acclaimed 1996 debut full-length album, North Sea Clean, distributed through Mushroom Distribution Services. After contributing to notable local scene compilations—including Au Go Go's Wonder from a Quarter Acre—the group went on an extended hiatus. Over the next two decades, individual members pursued diverse independent projects across no-wave, electronic, and post-rock labels.
Re-emerging in 2019 to continue exploring their brand of brawling guitar noise, deconstructed melodies and sardonic lyrics that dissect everyday existential crises with dark humor, and now with their brand new double single ‘Entropy//Bite Marks’ + an upcoming gig at The Tote alongside Screensaver + more
