Devonté Hynes has returned with “The Field,” his first new song as Blood Orange in three years. Written and produced by Hynes, the track features contributions from Caroline Polachek, Eva Tolkin, Tariq Al-Sabir, and Daniel Caesar, and incorporates a sample from the Durutti Column’s “Sing to Me.” The accompanying music video—directed by Hynes himself—follows the artist and his friends wandering through the lush countryside of rural England.
“The Field” marks Blood Orange’s first release since 2022’s Four Songs EP. In the years since, Hynes has focused on composing for stage and screen, scoring Paul Schrader’s Master Gardener in 2023 and providing original music for the Broadway play Job the following year. He’s also contributed to Lorde’s upcoming album Virgin and is set to tour with her later this year. In addition, Hynes collaborated with Turnstile on their forthcoming album Never Enough and joined them on tour. His last full-length Blood Orange project was 2019’s Angel’s Pulse mixtape, which followed 2018’s acclaimed studio album Negro Swan.
